Workshop: Rebuild your relationship with music

Many survivors of cults, high-control groups, and the troubled teen industry, associate music with their experience in high-control environments, leading to complex emotional responses.

This four-session virtual workshop, led by music therapist Dorian Wallace, offers practical tools to help you process these experiences and rediscover music as a positive, empowering part of your life. No prior experience is required.

It was perfect just like it was, glad I had the opportunity to check in with one of Janja’s events.

Got a feel for how my experience fits in with other survivors through the live experience.

Dorian setting clear boundaries at the start and throughout the sessions was helpful to know what the parameters were for the group.

Explicitly explaining what the group was and was not was helpful.

Empathetic statements and validating people’s comments were helpful.

The small group format was helpful so people had a chance to share.

Break-out rooms were helpful.

Hearing from others was helpful, it got me listening to music, which I haven’t done for a while. And reconnecting to music has been helpful and enjoyable.

Seeing the collective trauma of the group was validating.

Hearing the similar stories was validating.

It felt very validating to be in a support group with like-minded people.

Dorian showed up as a very understanding person.

Before the workshop, I didn’t view music as a problem.

I now see how we’ve been groomed and programmed through music.

I would recommend this workshop to other survivors of coercive control.
